This article presents dynamic ultrasound as a practical method for examining the adult hip in real time. Its key value is that it shows motion-dependent pathology that may be missed on static imaging, including snapping phenomena, labral motion, femoroacetabular impingement, nerve or tendon conflict, and instability around the hip. It is especially useful because the examiner can reproduce symptoms during scanning and directly observe how tendons, muscles, fluid, and bony structures interact during movement.

Interesting highlights:

  • Dynamic ultrasound helps distinguish fluid movement from synovial thickening and can show how joint effusion behaves during hip motion.

  • It can reveal abnormal labral movement, snapping iliopsoas tendon, and femoroacetabular impingement during provocative maneuvers.

  • The protocol also covers less obvious dynamic problems such as lateral snapping hip, piriformis-related sciatic nerve compression, ischiofemoral impingement, and proximal hamstring instability.

Who is this article most useful for?
MSK ultrasound clinicians, sports medicine and rehabilitation physicians, radiologists, and practitioners evaluating dynamic hip pain or snapping symptoms.
