This article presents dynamic ultrasound as a practical way to assess ankle and foot disorders during movement, stress testing, and symptom reproduction. Its main strength is that it shows instability, impingement, tendon subluxation, fluid redistribution, and nerve entrapment in real time, which may be less obvious on static images. It is especially useful for evaluating motion-related problems in ligaments, tendons, bursae, plantar fascia, and interdigital nerves.

Interesting highlights:

  • Dynamic scanning helps distinguish effusion from synovitis and shows how fluid shifts in the ankle joint with plantarflexion and dorsiflexion.

  • It is very useful for lateral ankle sprains and peroneal tendon instability, including tendon snapping or subluxation over the lateral malleolus.

  • The protocol also covers important forefoot and hindfoot problems such as Achilles tears, plantar fascia rupture, ganglia, and Morton’s neuroma, where dynamic maneuvers improve diagnosis and treatment planning.

Who is this article most useful for?
MSK ultrasound clinicians, sports medicine and rehabilitation physicians, radiologists, and practitioners evaluating ankle or foot pain with instability, snapping, or overuse symptoms.
